I’m very aware that much of what I write sounds critical of the United States. I can imagine someone might say “If you dislike it so much, why don’t you live somewhere else?!”
The fact is that I love this country. . .I just think that given how basically good we are with the resources we have, we can, and should, do better in a number of ways.
And so I feel compelled to say how right the recent Supreme Court decision was that gay marriage is legal throughout all states. For me, when we get it right as a country, I feel overwhelmed with gratitude and pride for what we do and what we have. My heart swells when I see a flag. I can even get all teary. And I know not everyone feels this way, but to me, anytime we can grant increased freedom and equality to groups of people, to do so is the right thing to do. . .that it’s the basis of this country and why it was founded.
So, congratulations to all those directly affected by this ruling and congratulations to everyone for being able to step forward into a bright new day where there’s one less barrier to love and respect for all beings. This isn’t the end of the issue, of course. . .but it’s enough for right now, and it’s a magnificent step in the right direction.
